SYNOPSIS
The favelas of Rio de Janeiro, created more than a century ago, are accustomed to self-management. Their complex social fabric survives on the margins of the city. The covid-19 pandemic has increased social inequalities around the world, particularly affecting the most vulnerable and poorest people, and in Rio it has provided a new missed opportunity to curb inequality, highlighting the fragile institutional support structures that exist in the most deprived areas of the city.
